Acoustically Treating a Movie Production Studio

When it comes to producing a movie, audio quality is an extremely important factor to take into consideration. Especially if you're not using any voice-overs. This requires the audio picked up by the microphones, shotgun mics or camera mics to be clear and high quality. Good dialogue makes a good movie and the last thing you want is watchers trying to understand what the actor/actress said in a scene. If you're using a big room or warehouse to film in or create scenes, chances are the acoustics are going to be terrible. Installing acoustical treatments like sound absorption panels or ceiling baffles is an excellent solution to clean up the audio in your production space. If you aren't a big time movie production company on Hollywood budget and just simply filming indy movies or scenes for YouTube in a home setup, you will greatly benefit from acoustically treating your space. This will create more professional feel for your videos. No one likes watching something that has harsh audio that is hard to understand. If you are using a small set up, simply installing some acoustic panels on the walls will dramatically improve the audio quality for your videos. If you are in a large warehouse or professional movie production studio, the extra high ceilings will need to be taken into account when determining how much treatment you need for that space. Installing acoustic ceiling baffles are also a great solution for a large setup, especially if you don't want your acoustic treatments to be seen.

We recommend a bare minimum of 30% room coverage to achieve a better acoustical environment for your production space.
To calculate your space's treatment requirements simply multiply the square footage (length x width) dimensions of the room by .30
The resulting number is how many square feet (sq/ft) of acoustical treatments you will need to achieve a beneficial change in the room's acoustical properties.

Note: Remember that you need to account for the ceiling height when determining your rooms requirements. The previous equation is for spaces that have an 8ft-10ft ceilings. So for every extra 8ft increase in height, your treatment requirements double. If you have a 16ft ceiling multiply the final number by (2). If you have a 24ft ceiling multiply your final number by (3). This will ensure that your room is getting adequate coverage.
